Schedule

8:30am Registration Opens
9:00am Introduction to Soils (2 hours)
The indoor classroom session will
cover the basic characteristics of soils
such as color and texture. Soil forming
factors, horizons, redoximorphic
features will also be covered. An
overview of soil classification—
definitions and processes—will be
presented. Finally, sources of soil
information will be covered.
11:00am Break
11:15am Soil Texturing (2 hours)
The soil texturing session will focus on
demonstrating two different methods
of texture identification and analysis.
Training participants will have hands
on experience with both methods.
12:15pm Lunch
12:45pm Soil Texturing continues
1:45pm Pedon Description (2 hours)
This session will be conducted in
the field and will focus on teaching
participants how to identify and
describe landscape postion, soil
horizons, textures, color, redox features
and other features. Exposed soil units
will be used to demonstrate these
characteristics and allow participants
hands-on experience.
3:45pm Evaluation, Program Q&A and
Workshop conclude

About the Speaker

Dr. Judith Turk, Pedologist and Asst.
Professor in the Conservation and
Survey Division in the School of
Natural Resources at University of
Nebraka?Lincoln.
Dr. Judith Turk is a Pedologist and Assistant
Professor in the Conservation and Survey
Division in the School of Natural Resources
at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She
earned her B.S degree in Biology from the
University of Maryland and her M.S. and
Ph.D. degrees in Soil and Water Science from
the University of California at Riverside. Her
research interests include soil development in
depressional wetlands, the use of digital tools
and sensory observation in soil morphology,
and soil science education. She teaches
courses on Great Plains Field Pedology, Soil
Evaluation, and Soil and Society and coaches
the Soil Judging Team.
