  • Review of the field study for the On-Site industry of pathogens common in wastewater and exposures to workers in the industry who are exposed to it.

11:00 am Evacuation and Trench Safety
  • Introduce installers for OSS and tank repair to the requirements of excavation and trenching.
  • Guidelines for excavations and trenches over 4 feet deep.

1:30 pm Confined Space Entry
  • Review the definition of a CSE (confined space entry) and its applications in the On-Site industry.
  • Using case studies, you will learn how to do this work safely and what equipment you’ll need.

About the Speaker


John Thomas is the former Executive Director for the Washington Onsite Sewage Association (WOSSA) and he held this position for 16 years. He is also a trainer and the Training Director for the OSS education program in Washington. In his role as Executive Director, he is responsible for the development and delivery of new and ongoing programs for the Washington Onsite Sewage Association that include the creation of training and learning resources for industry, the public, and regulatory communities relating to the Onsite industry. In addition to industry-related technology training for Design, Installation, and Maintainers, he has developed several safety-focused training resources that are specific to the Onsite industry under both the Federal OSHA Susan Harwood and Washington SHIP (Safety Health Investment Program) grants. He is the principle trainer for
WOSSA for Industry related safety issues including; Confined Space Entry, Excavation and Trenching and Pathogen Exposures for Workers in Onsite and OSHA Focus Four for Onsite. He holds a B.S. Degree in Environmental Earth Sciences from Northern Michigan University.
